Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programme Phase III (WSSSSRP III)

Assignment location

Nigeria, Africa

Client/Funding

National Planning Commission /
European Commission

The Nigerian water sector is faced with diverse and wide-ranging problems, both at the federal as well as the state level. According to the latest available data at the national level, only around 60% of the population has access to improved water sources, and only approximately 30% have access to improved sanitation. In some states, up to 50% of the population’s access to water is through “unsafe technologies”, including ponds, streams or rainwater. The project focused on the enhancement of the states’ capacities regarding water governance, both in terms of the strategic and regulatory framework and in terms of enhanced abilities of the responsible bodies at the state level. HYDROPHIL provided the following services:

  • Project management and coordination activities
  • Facilitation of the water and sanitation reform process
  • Implementation of water supply works contracts in urban areas and small towns in the states of Adamawa, Ekiti and Plateau
  • Information processing and monitoring
