HYDROPHIL is pleased to announce the launch of our newest EU-funded project, “Further support in the implementation of the reforms in the water sector”, in partnership with the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia.

The official kick-off meeting took place in Skopje on 20 May 2025, marking the beginning of a transformative effort to modernise and strengthen the country’s water and sanitation services in alignment with EU accession requirements.

As the lead partner, HYDROPHIL brings extensive international experience in water governance, regulatory reform, and performance-based utility development to this project. Together with our consortium, we are committed to supporting institutional strengthening, inclusive participation, and long-term resilience in North Macedonia’s water services.

Led by HYDROPHIL GmbH and implemented together with our partners GIZ, VEVE Group, and IAWD, this technical assistance project will support the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning in driving forward critical reforms in the sector. These include operationalising the national strategy for reorganising municipal water utilities, enhancing inter-municipal cooperation, establishing viable tariff models aligned with the “polluter pays” and “full cost recovery” principles, and promoting the formation of sustainable, regionalised service providers.

Theresa Schütz, Project Manager at HYDROPHIL, states:

We are excited to contribute to improving access to safe, reliable water and wastewater services for communities across North Macedonia. This project is a step forward in strengthening essential infrastructure and service delivery, helping ensure that people have the quality services they need now and in the future.”

This initiative is a strategic part of the country’s EU approximation efforts, especially in meeting the requirements under Chapter 27 on Environment and Climate Change. It builds on years of preparatory work and will support practical implementation through a coordinated, inclusive, and locally anchored approach.

We look forward to working together toward more efficient, accessible, and sustainable water services in North Macedonia.
