Integrated River Basin Management Project of Ribeireta
The
Integrated River Basin Management Project of Ribeireta (PCTIR) was initiated in
1998, being authenticated by an agreement signed among the Austrian Development
Cooperation and the Government of Cape Verde. The specific objective of the project
was to implement a new methodology for water resources and agricultural land management.
Within the framework of IWRM following activities were initiated: (1) institutional
strengthening of the Association of the Farmers and Breeders (AGROGADO), a farmers
association for capacity building and autonomous integrated river basin management,
(2) technological improvement of agricultural production and marketing support,
(3) implementation of complementary technical measures and infrastructural works,
(4) hydrological monitoring, data management, assessment of groundwater balance,
and (5) improvement of water quality, sanitary and hygienic conditions in the
basin. The contribution of hydrophil was in particular to assist with its
experts as backstopping unit and to facilitate communication between the various
stakeholders. The project was concluded in March of 2005 and the Government of
Cap Verde considered the results as great success. Today the Ribeireta concept
serves as model for the government for the implementation of integrated river
basin management systems in other basins. <
