Financing sanitation to meet the millennium development goals

The study, financed by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment in support of the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP), involved identification of key financing challenges to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) related to sanitation and definition of specific financing mechanisms to overcome these constraints. The study drew from examples of good practice of financing approaches in several countries based upon the available literature as well as drawing directly from the experiences from the WSP field offices and feedback from the relevant thematic groups of the World Bank. The output from the study was a paper orientated towards an international audience of government representatives, donor agencies, NGOs, civil society associations and international financing institutions (IFIs), which was presented at the 12th Conference of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-12) in New York 2004 and was subsequently published by WSP.
