Drinking Water Supply in the Gaza Strip
In the
Palestinian territories, water is the most precious natural resource, and its
scarcity is a major constraint for economic and social development. High population
growth and extreme population density and the increasing agricultural use of ground
water sources in the Gaza Strip have caused over-exploitation and ongoing deterioration
of the groundwater. In this situation, the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA),
with financial support from the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and technical
assistance from hydrophil, decided to develop an integrated solution to
provide the communities of the central part of the Gaza Strip (Dheir al Balah)
and the permanent refugee camps with safe drinking-water, assure water supplies
even in times of shortage, and rehabilitate stressed groundwater resources. Consisting
of a bank-filtration well, a reverse-osmosis desalination plant, a drinking water
distribution line, water shops and a tanker filling station operated by local
private sector, the system serves about 80,000 people with safe drinking-water. <
