Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme in the Sofala Province

The main objective of the ADC co-financed rural development programme in Mozambique is to contribute to the reduction of the poverty for families living in the rural areas and the semi-urban growth centres in the Sofala Province. The project contributes to this overall objective by promotion of potable water supply and adequate sanitation, involving three strategic partners; the end users and their water supply and sanitation committees (WAS), the districts (of Buzi, Cheringoma, Chibabava and Marromeu with the municipalities of Dondo and Marromeu), and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DAS) within the provincial government's Directorate for Public Works and Housing (DPOPH). The water schemes in the district municipalities Marromeu and Inhaminga are to be rehabilitated and an organisational setting developed. The project aims to develop capacity at each of these levels and provide the basis for strategic and sustainable interventions throughout the province and to support the development of a sector wide approach in support of the implementation of the official national water transition plan.
