Phase 1:
- Screening of hydro-meteorological data available from national hydro-meteorological services and relevant international organisations/networks

Phase 2:
- Identification of a pilot watershed in North Eastern Afghanistan
- Literature review of publications, studies and research results regarding the extent and the effects of climate change on water availability and crop production in the selected watersheds;
- Comparison of irrigation water availability and crop water requirements;
- Publication of results.

Project objectives
The objectives of this consultancy were 
(i) to conceptualize a suitable development program in the selected pilot watersheds based on required water and land use changes due to climatic impact; and 
(ii) to contribute to the climate change debate by publishing the results of the activities carried out under the first and second consultancy.

Project description
Phase 1: The consultancy focused on hydro-meteorological data available and provided a review of evidence of climate change and its subsequent impact in selected areas of Central Asia.
Phase 2: Phase 1 provided evidence of significant climate change impact on river flow, and hence on the need to adapt land and water use to the future expected natural conditions. Phase 2 was carried out to harden evidence of obvious trends and to identify mitigation measures.

Project specifics

Research study in five Ceantral Asian countries: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq.

Services

Phase 1: 
(i) Screening of hydro-meteorological data; 
(ii) Cooperation with national hydro-meteorological services and relevant international organisations/networks; 
(iii) Review of predictions made by global GCMs for the region; 
(iv) Preparation of a proposal for further in-depth studies including cost estimates. 

Phase 2: 
(i) Delineation and detailed description of the selected pilot watersheds to be studied; 
(ii) Identification of a further pilot watershed in North Eastern Afghanistan; 
(iii) Literature review of publications, studies and research results regarding the extent and the effects of climate change on water availability and crop production in the selected watersheds; 
(iv) Comparison of irrigation water availability and crop water requirements in the selected pilot watershed; and 
(v) Preparation of a final report including also all data and information collected and analysed during Phase 1.
