Identification of a Multipurpose Water Resources Development Project in the Gucha Migori River Basin in Kenya

Project objectives
The objective is to improve water security and supply, food and energy security; reduce flow variability and flood damage; and contribute towards improved livelihoods.

Project description
There is recognition of the need for a regional perspective on multipurpose water resources use, together with appropriate management interventions, to reduce vulnerability to rainfall variability. Management as well as regulation of water resources is a critical factor underlying efforts to promote growth and raise incomes. By development of the Lake Kyoga sub basin, the Nile Basin Initiatives Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Program will generate ‘public goods’ such as flood protection and improved watershed management, and contribute towards regional stability in the region.
