Project objectives
The objective of the activity was to support EAC in carrying out a detailed gap analysis and assessment on technical capacity development measures for small hydropower in the region. The analysis formed the basis for the development of an action plan. The project activities led to: (i) Small HP capacity building programmes (with a focus on O&M); (ii) Coordination of small HP development among EAC member states; (iii) EACs Regional Strategy on Scaling Up Access to Modern Energy Services; (iv) Support for setting up the EA Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE).

Project description
The key barrier for growth of the East African small hydropower industry is the acute shortage of skilled personnel. EUEI PDF has received a request from the EAC for assistance in the area of small hydropower capacity development. The assistance is meant to trigger further support in building up a portfolio in renewable energy within the region.

Project data
Small hydro industry in the range up to 10MW.

Project specifics
Small hydro industry in the East African region characterized by sporadic small and isolated pilot projects; missing proper O&M; rehabilitation of defunct installations; development of new small hydro sites.
