Project objectives
The overall objective of the project was to present a study that defines the policies, strategies and programs on how Mozambique can reduce the vulnerability of the urban areas to extreme events exacerbated by climate change, and increase their ability to project themselves and plan to such events. The objective of the Consultant for the sub-component "Sustaining Urban water Supply" was to identify the location of stormwater problems within the city of Maputo leading to recommendations for structural and nonstructural measures to solve or alleviate these problems.

Project description

Present a study that defines the policies, strategies and programs on how Mozambique can reduce the vulnerability of the urban areas to extreme events exacerbated by climate change.

Project specifics

The high percentage of impervious surfaces in urban areas prevent rainfall from being absorbed by the soil, resulting in the generation of high volumes of rainwater. Excess rainwater tends to concentrate in low areas or poor drainage resulting in adverse impacts such as roads impassable, houses flooded and blocked sewers. Some of these problems will intensify if climate change result in more intense rainfall.

Services

Urban stormwater analysis based on computer model to identify potential points of water concentration under the scenarios of current and future climate. Field surveys to verify independently the bottlenecks of rainwater and to identify potential users of rainwater partially processed. Recommendations for new infrastructure to solve problems with urban flooding with stormwater. Recommendations to implement systems for capturing, processing and distributing rainwater for reuse, providing new business opportunities for private investors where possible.
